FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS
Breast Imaging Fellowship at Susan Komen Breast Center (SGKBC)
This is a one-year program with up to two fellows accepted each year. Common procedures include ultrasound of the breast and axilla with coordinated breast physical examination, ultrasound-guided core biopsy, stereotactic-guided core biopsy, cyst aspiration, fine needle aspiration of solid lesions, ductography, pneumocystography, needle localizations for surgical resection and sentinel lymph node injection. In addition, fellows will gain experience with digital mammography, computer-aided detection and breast MRI.
Approximately 22,500 screening cases are evaluated and 8,000 diagnostic studies are performed each year at the SGKBC. Approximately 6,500 procedures are performed yearly at the SGKBC and OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. These include over 400 stereotactic and ultrasound-guided core biopsies, 200 ductograms, 300 pre-operative localization procedures and 5,000 dedicated breast ultrasound examinations performed by radiologists.
Interventional Fellowship
A one-year program. ACGME approved.
The Fellow under the direct supervision of an attending physician will gain experience specifically in both diagnostic and therapeutic vascular procedures.
Procedures consist of Angioplasty, Vascular Stenting, Thrombolytic therapy, Embolization, Dialysis graft maintenance, Central Venous access placement, Stent graft placement, percutaneous biopsies, percutaneous drainage procedures and limited Neuroangiography.
Approximately 3,500 vascular and nonvascular interventional procedures are performed per year. This includes 1900 diagnostic arteriograms with over 800 arterial interventions. There will be a strong emphasis on the clinical aspects of vascular disease. Clinical duties include participation in daily ward rounds and an outpatient clinic. In addition, clinical and basic research is offered for those who are interested. Research is supported by clinical research staff and an animal laboratory.
Fellows will be under the supervision of four CAQ certified Interventional Radiologists one NeuroInterventional trained Radiologist.
Neuroradiology Fellowship
A 2-year program— 3 months performing neuroangiography, myelography and selected interventional neuroradiology procedures depending on level of skill. 9 months per year of diagnostic neuroradiology including MRI, MRA, PET Scan, CT, CT Angiography, Neurosonography, (TCD), Functional MRI and plain film evaluation of the spine and calvarium.
The average number of diagnostic neuroangiograms is 500-600 per year. 100-150 extracranial angiograms, 10 spinal angiograms per year. Neuroimaging of pediatric patients are about 15% of our total. Approximately 125-140 interventional neuroradiologic procedures are performed on a yearly basis.
Service is supported by 4 senior Neuroradiologists. Active Neurosurgery Program with residents, Pediatric Neurologist and Neurology Program with an active Stroke Team.
