Methodist gets nuclear medicine CT scanner

Methodist Medical Center has acquired a medical imaging machine designed to give more accurate diagnoses and better outcomes for patients.

Methodist is the first hospital in the country where the GE Discovery 670 combined nuclear medicine/CT scanner has been installed and is operational. General Electric Healthcare, its manufacturer, contacted Dr. Carter Young, medical director for imaging at Methodist, and asked if the hospital would be interested in testing the machine.

The Discovery 670 gamma camera combined with the scanner has already proved its worth.

Diseases that were missed in some patients were found when the patients were retested on the new machine, Young said.

"Using both modalities simultaneously makes the tests more accurate."

Discovery 670 was first introduced in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Its first U.S. installation was at Methodist early this year. It can reduce the scan time dramatically.

Kyphoplasty

Dr. Bob Smouse, CIRA Interventional Radiologist was recently the focus of an article in the Peoria Journal Star on "Kyphoplasty". The procedure was developed in the 1990s and is used for stabilizing a fracture in the spine, but it can also reduce back pain, restore height and improve spinal alignment. People with osteoporosis, most frequently elderly women, are most susceptible to fractures in the spine and Kyphoplasty can help. Dr. Smouse performs the procedure at Proctor, while Central Illinois Radiological Associates partners Dr. Larry Wang and Dr. Michael Zagardo offer it at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (Peoria).

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Kevin Fahey (CIRA Radiologist) was given the teacher of the year award from the graduating radiology residents at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. (UICOMP) Dr. Fahey himself, a graduating UICOMP radiology resident in the class of 2004, joined CIRA in 2005. He is currently the Director of Cardiothoracic Radiology at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
