What is a Hepatobiliary Scan (a.k.a.-- HIDA Scan)? Reason(s) for the Examination:

A hepatobiliary scan (HIDA scan) is used to help identify diseased gallbladders and bile drainage problems. Determine if abdominal pain is related to gallbladder disease.

Length of Exam:

Usually 60-90 minutes. Optional wait of 4 hours followed by 5 minutes of imaging.

Preparation:

Should not eat for 2-4 hours prior to the study. Do not take Demerol or Morphine (painkillers) for 24 hours prior to the study. Be prepared to list medications you are taking.

Description:

An IV (intravenous) catheter will be inserted in an arm or hand vein. If you have not eaten for more than 24 hours prior to the exam, a gastric hormone will be injected through the catheter to increase bile flow into your gallbladder. Bile tracer will be injected through the catheter, followed by 60 minutes of imaging. If indicated, more gastric hormone or Morphine will be injected through the catheter followed by 30 minutes of imaging. Additional images 2.5 or 24 hours later may be optional.
