What is a Renal Scan for Infection or Tumors? Reason(s) for the Examination:
A renal scan (for infection or tumors) is used to help look for kidneys scarred by infection. Determine if a mass in the kidney is normal or abnormal kidney tissue or a tumor.
Length of Exam:
15 minutes of imaging, return 2 hours later for 30 minutes of imaging.
Preparation:
None. Young children who cannot hold still may require sedative medications-- but we try not to medicate children if at all possible. Some children have unexpected responses to sedative medications and may move around more after medications.
Description:
Tracer is injected into a vein, followed by 15 minutes of imaging. Return 2 hours later for 30 minutes of imaging.
