Raymond E. Bertino, M.D. is a
Clinical Professor of Radiology and Surgery at the
University of Illinois College of Medicine at
Peoria. He is Director of General and Vascular
Ultrasound at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in
Peoria, Illinois.
He is a native of Michigan and attended the
University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor.
He was inducted into the AOA honorary society as a
junior. During his senior year, he served as
President of the Student Council. He was awarded his
M.D. degree with distinction in 1982.
Dr. Bertino did his Diagnostic Radiology Residency
and Fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the
University of Washington in Seattle. He is board
certified from the American Board of Radiology
(1987) and was awarded a Certificate of Added
Qualification in Vascular and Interventional
Radiology (1995).
He has been with Central Illinois Radiological
Associates, Ltd. since 1988. He practiced
Interventional Radiology exclusively for his first
eight years in Peoria. In 1996, he became Director
of Vascular Ultrasound at OSF Saint Francis and now
devotes a large portion of his time to Ultrasound
with a particular interest in Vascular Ultrasound.
He continues to remain active in the Interventional
Radiology Section also.
He is particularly proud of having started a
successful program in renal artery duplex at OSF
Saint Francis where approximately 1000 exams are
done yearly. The performance of renal artery duplex
requires great accuracy that his laboratory has been
able to achieve. He has helped to define national
standards in ultrasound having served on the CSC
Subcommittees for the Revision of the ACR Standard
for the Performance of Abdomen and for the Revision
of the ACR Standard for the Performance of the
Carotid Duplex Exam.
Dr. Bertino has a great interest in teaching. He has
received numerous Golden Apple teaching awards from
the University of Illinois College of Medicine,
being chosen by senior medical students. He has also
been chosen by radiology residents to receive the
teacher of the year award. He was winner of the
first Paul Dirkse award which is given to the
attending in the program who represents a role model
for the residents. He has run a CME conference for
several years on General and Vascular Ultrasound. He
speaks on ultrasound topics across the Midwest.
Dr. Bertino is a member of the American College of
Radiology, the Society of Radiologists in
Ultrasound, the Society of Interventional Radiology,
the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine,
and the American Heart Association. He is a
Councilor in the American College of Radiology. He
is a Past-President of the Central Illinois
Radiological Society. He is the current President of
the Illinois Radiological Society. He also is a
member of the Ultrasound Commission of the ACR. He
sits on the board of the Joint Review
Committee–Diagnostic Medical Sonography which is the
national accrediting body for ultrasound schools.
