Dr. Shile received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his medical degree from Yale University. His medical internship was at Baylor University in Dallas. He was a radiology research scholar at the University of Texas before completing his radiology residency at Stanford University. Following residency, he completed post-doctoral research and breast imaging fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Shile is board certified by the American Board of Radiology, and a member of the Society of Breast Imaging, American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, Association of University Radiologists, and American Roentgen Ray Society.  

He is the author or co-author of numerous manuscripts and presentations, with expertise in both breast imaging and digital imaging technology in radiology. Dr. Shile has chaired and served on a number of review panels at the National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society, Food and Drug Administration, and Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.
